It was the first game of the season for the ladies 3s and it was off to a flying start against a determined Wakefield opposition.
Wakefield were stopped short right from the beginning with a tense attack from Driffield and after unrelenting pressure, conceded their first goal from a short corner crafted by Mia, Polly, Julie, Isla and Bella. This led to another swift strike from Polly to take Driffield up to a 2-0 advantage.
This ignited a spark in Wakefield and they came back fighting, scoring an unfortunate goal against a unified defence of Meg, Kirsty, Lucy, Anna and Riona. But this made Driffield gain an appetite for more goals, with captain Anna giving an optimistic half-time talk that rallied the players.
Driffield then came out in the second half unwilling to concede anything. Lexi battled endlessly in midfield, searching for an avenue through the wall of defence that Wakefield had created, even sacrificing a grazed arm in the process. After performing medical duties, Sarah came storming onto the pitch to score an agile goal and increase the score to 3-1. Then came the endless barrage of attack from Driffield, with goals from Lexi and Julie to take the team up to a lead of 5-1. This was not without the cooperation of the defence with some excellent crosses from Meg, Kirsty, Julie and Lucy to establish high levels of ball possession. Mia and Daisy carried these balls forward with persistence to the attack, creating even more opportunities.
After some excellent runs from Isla, those opportunities became reality. Bella found the ball in the attacking goal and after performing a 360 degree spin of confusion, perplexed the goalkeeper and sealed a 6-1 victory.
Well done to everyone that played! Who knows what this team will do next…
Special mentions to Girlies Lexi and Mia!
