A late match in Leeds against Leeds University 5 and Driffield had 3 new faces in the squad.
The injection of new, young, talented players into the squad elevated our game.
Quick passing of the ball, running into spaces and determined tackling equalled the University girl’s game.
Midfield, Southwell, Leeson & Goodlass kept tight formation to block the Leeds attack and sweep the ball out to the wings; Clemmie Bottomley and Sophia Bryan.
20 minutes into the game and Leeds got a quick break and a lucky stick deflection past our GK.
Driffield Ladies stayed positive and came back very hard, winning a couple of penalty corners, one which was saved on the line and one that went high.
Leeds were really feeling under pressure when Hannah Southwell, making a good run down the pitch was tackled and the deflected ball resulted in a head injury that stopped the game.
After assessing the injury, Captain Soanes made the decision to take Hannah to A & E leaving 10 players on the pitch.
Driffield Ladies finished the first half strong winning many penalty corners and a goal that was controversially disallowed; where is VAR when you need it ?
Into the second half and the Driffield defence played some outstanding hockey. Andriana Drewery with her strong clearance hits down the wings, Neal-Smith and Falkingham with their calm, solid blocking in the D.
Pease in centre-forward position supported by Bryan and Percival battered the Leeds defence and were unlucky not to get on the score line.
10 minutes before the final whistle and Driffield were caught out by a bouncing ball in our D that frustratingly just dribbled across our goal line.
Leeds University leading 2:0 held their formation up to the final whistle, capitalising on the Driffield ladies reduced numbers on the pitch.
A vast improvement on the previous week’s game and Ben Rhydding next week will have a strong opponent.
