Driffield Ladies 3rd opposition on Saturday was a home match against York Ladies 5th.
Winning the first push-back and Driffield quickly found a gap to feed the ball upto Bella Thompson on the RW. York soon showed their strength with solid defending from the fullbacks who stopped us in our tracks. They quickly took the free-hit and York midfield intercepted the ball and then good communication between their midfield and forwards had our defence challenged.
Riona Welburn GK kicked clear a couple of shots on goal and Sharon Falkingham managed to stop one on the line. Morgan was able to get some good clearances from the 16m line but York were relentless in their attack.
Maya Brown had some great through runs up the LW but York fullbacks were impenetrable and we couldn’t get a clear shot on goal.
20 minutes into the game and York scored from quick slip pass in our D.
Driffield lost momentum and confidence and 5 minutes later, York took advantage with another well executed shot from the top of D.
Driffield ladies 0:2 down were not out of the game yet and midfielders Leeson, Soanes & Southwell worked hard to get the ball through to our forwards. Vic Collinge distributed the ball out to the wings and controlled the game.
Maya won us a penalty corner from a clumsy foot in the D but again Driffield could not draw the GK off her line to get a tight shot from the base line.
York had a quick surge just before the half time whistle resulting in a 3rd goal.
A couple of substitutes and input from the GK and Driffield dominated the 2nd half.
Tighter marking from the wingbacks Bea Neal-Smith and Lucy Welburn blocked the York pathway down the wings. Kate Leeson never gave up in midfield, chasing the ball down and feeding the passes through to the forwards.
Driffield ladies had a number of good chances with Bella & Maya flying down the wings only to run into a wall of York defenders; an excellent GK and two fullbacks that covered any gaps with gloved hands and sticks to the floor.
Finally in the last couple of minutes of the match, Julie Pease was able to collect a clean pass from Kate, run to the top of the D and take a shot which was neatly deflected in to the left corner of the goal by Maya Brown.
Final score was Driffield 1 & York 3.
Disappointing for the home crowd but we will work on our weaknesses and hopefully bring home a win from Leeds University next week.
Player of the match for her relentless determination is Kate Leeson.
Huge thanks to Umpires Russ and John and as always Deano at the Spread Eagle for teas.
