Driffield Ladies 2 put on a defensive masterclass this weekend, sealing a 3–0 victory over Epworth in a match that had everything – grit, graft, and goals galore.
Between the posts, Shanie was in no mood to share the spotlight (or the goal), calmly sweeping up anything that came her way and proving that nothing was getting past her on her watch.
At the back, Charlotte, Lucy, Meg, and Kirsty were rock solid. Lucy and Meg kept Epworth’s forwards firmly grounded, while Charlotte and Kirsty turned short corners into a two-woman magic show. You could say they really cornered the market.
The breakthrough came right at the end of the first half from a well-worked short corner. Injected and stopped neatly, the ball found its way to Charlotte, who slipped it to Kirsty. Back to Charlotte… and bang! Into the goal. A textbook case of “you have it, no you have it” – but with a much better ending.
In midfield, Katie, Sarah, and Sophia worked tirelessly, linking play and keeping Driffield ticking. They covered every inch of the pitch. Their movement and distribution kept the pressure building and Epworth on the back foot.
The second goal, in the 61st minute, was a thing of beauty. Starting from the back and worked up the pitch, it was a full team effort – from the defenders building play, through the midfield engine room, and into the path of Phoebe, who coolly slotted home. Phoebe really stuck it to them.
Up front, Lauren, Polly, and Bella kept the Epworth defence under constant pressure with clever runs and relentless energy. They might not all have their names on the scoresheet, but they certainly had their sticks in the action, stretching the play and creating space throughout.
Then came the third in the 65th minute – another short corner special. Once again, Charlotte and Kirsty stepped up for their now-famous routine. In and out between them until Kirsty put it straight into the goal! At this rate, they might need their own highlight reel – or at least a nickname. “The Corner Queens,” perhaps?
With Lucy and Meg calmly clearing danger, Katie, Sarah and Sofia bossing the middle, and the forwards pressing to the final whistle, Driffield saw the game out in style.
And of course, the all-important awards… Girlie of the Game goes to Shanie for that spotless clean sheet, while Donkey of the Game goes to Charlotte.
A 3–0 win, a clean sheet, and a performance where everyone played their part. The defenders really did save the day — but this was a full-squad stick-tacular effort.
On to the next one — Driffield are on a roll, and they’re not about to let it slip! ?
