First game back after the Christmas break and Driffield 2s were straight back into action against a strong Doncaster side.
Doncaster started well, arriving with 16 players, while Driffield faced the challenge with just one (injured) sub. Knowing they had the conserve their energy would be key over the full 70 minutes, the team settled quickly. Doncaster’s sharp passing and composed build-up paid off as they opened the scoring early.
Driffield responded well, refusing to let heads drop. Solid defensive work created a clear counter-attack, with the midfield working well as a unit to move the ball wide and to the forwards making their brilliant runs. Stretching the Doncaster defence opened space for Hannah Percival, who finished clinically with a fantastic reverse stick strike into the back corner.
The teams went into half time level at 1–1, with everything still to play for. After an excellent half-time talk from Henri and Steve, Driffield returned confident and focused. Continued team pressure earned more opportunities with one eventually leading to Sarah Teasdale doing a brilliant strike to put Driffield 2–1 ahead.
Driffield stayed composed to see out the game, defending strongly and denying Doncaster any further chances. A hard-fought and well-deserved 2–1 win, and a fantastic team performance to kick off the second half of the season.
Thank you as always to our umpires and the Spread Eagle for match teas.
