Not our day…
On Saturday 21st October Driffield 2nd travelled to Adel to play Leeds Adel 2nd and with a strong squad, they were positive!
Driffield started strong, applying pressure well upfront and looked solid from the back! An early break from Adel down the middle of the pitch led to an unfortunate and questionable goal being conceived early on however, hit from the top of D, which most players, including some from Adel, convinced was from the outside and therefore left to go in…
With this unlucky start, Driffield didn’t let their heads drop and played some great hockey, consistently stringing passes together down the right nicely, from Meg Sellar at Right Back through to Emily Collinge in Midfield onto Millie Riby upfront. Driffield found themselves in some great positions for some chances at goal and after a few missed chances Driffield got themselves a short corner. A familiar face returning back to the team, Emily Brightling, stood confidently on top D and scored the equaliser for Driffield- putting the score 1 all into halftime!
Driffield returned confident after an encouraging team talk from their captain/ coach for the game, Fiona Tuplin, and the intensity was high with Polly Burgess, Millie Riby, Pippa Lucas and Katie Lee working tirelessly up front, and Midfields Emily Collinge, Emily Brightling and Hattie Gillingham working together to keep Adel’s breakthroughs at bay. At the back Megan Stellar, Lucinda Maltas, Charlotte Smith and Kirsty Edmond and goalie Debbie Nelson worked well as a unit, communicating nicely and switching the ball smoothly to keep possession, but another unfortunate goal from Adel put them 2-1 up and in the lead with 20 minutes to go.
Driffield kept strong and although some promising and exciting moments arose from some great play from everyone, including some controlled work from Charlotte at the back, great skills from Pip in Mid and some great runs upfront from Pol, Adel worked well and transferred the ball effectively, getting a further breakthrough to score their 3rd and final goal.
With some last-minute changes to Driff's strategies- pushing high and strong- which worked well, they couldn’t claw back any more goals and the game ended 3-1 to Adel at full-time.
Unfortunately not Driffield’s day but a great effort from all and a score that didn’t reflect the game or the work everyone put in.
Well done everyone! Next time we’ll get them!
