Impenetrable

The 14th October brought home a bright and early Saturday match for Driffield Ladies 2s as they faced City of York 3s. Motivated by their routine pre-game team talk and eager supporters on the sidelines, 2nds started the game fabulously. The ladies applied pressure consistently from the defence, to the midfielders, across to the forwards, placing them in good step for gaining possession of the match. Unfortunately, York battled back just as hard with a solid structure allowing them to advance down the pitch to counter-attack. Though this proved no match for Driffield’s skilful defenders and Kat in goal - unwilling to let anything fire past her. As the half time whistle blew, frustrations ran high.

Captain Tuplin regrouped her players and reinstalled a new faith in the game, alongside a fresh boost of sugar. Heading back onto the pitch feeling rejuvenated, the clever use of switching around the back granted Driffield’s wingbacks the opportunities to fire tactical balls down their lines to eager forwards. Rapid and sharp tackles from every player led to a clear show of dominance and possession within the second half. Throughout, tactical passes and drives climbed Driffield up the pitch. With this long awaited access into the attacking D, midfielders and forwards joined together in firing relentless yet powerful shots at the goal but, despite best efforts, a highly determined goalkeeper stood in their way. Before Driffield could slot a goal in the back of the net, the full time whistle blew all too soon. With points on the board, Ladies 2’s left the pitch together with heads held high, a few too many injuries and lasagne on the horizon.
