Local derby against Driffield & Pocklington was always going to be a hard one. There has not been a win for Driffield over the last few seasons, was today going to be their day?
On paper a strong team was selected and everyone knew what they were doing on the pitch, holding their positions and staying strong. Coach/player Tuplin unable to play from a calf injury apparently was very helpful on the sidelines directing and encouraging.
There were many exciting moments, Driffield moving the ball well around the back and in midfield, creating some great opportunities for the forwards.
The break through came after Driffield got a short corner and Amy Moore convert a fabulous drag flick into the corner of the goal 1-0.
Pock had a large squad so the intensity and speed was there for all the match, would it prove too much for Driffield?
A fabulous through ball from Amy Moore which Millie Riby picked up well and beat the defender with her speed, converted the next goal. In the last 10 mins Pock gave a big push but Henri Williams, Charlotte Smith, Kirsty Edmonds, Meg Sellars and Amy Moore handled them well to go into halftime 2 nil up!
Driffield had worked their socks off in the first half and coach Tuplin wanted that same intensity in the 2nd half. The midfield of Emily Collinge, Hattie Gillingham, Lucinda Maltas and forwards Zoe Howe, Katie Lee, Millie Riby and Polly Burgess all stepped up and kept the work rate up with a little encouragement from the sideline.
It didn’t go all Driffield’s way as Pock hit the posts and cross bar, had 3 shots stopped on the line by Driffield but it just wasn’t their day. Driffield got another short corner awarded, this time Henri Williams went straight down the middle and lightening Riby pounced on the ball with a reverse shot and dependable Burgess was there to pop it in over the line, 3-0!
Kat Young in goal had a wonderful game, making save after save, definitely keeping Driffield in the game.
With two minutes to go Amy Moore unfortunately went down with a bad calf injury which will be a big loss over the next few weeks!
But nothing could stop the joy of that 3 nil win, what a boost of confidence against one of the top teams in the league.
Well Done girls let keep it up!
Girlie Kat Young and Donkey Fiona Tuplin.
