Ladies 1’s v Wakefield 3’s

“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” – Vicky Scott (philosopher, defender, victim of umpiring)

A 2–2 scoreline suggests a thrilling, evenly matched contest. A real nail-biter. A proper game of hockey.
This, dear reader, is propaganda.
The truth: Driffield turned up with a bare 11, Wakefield with fourteen, and the umpires with… vibes.

First Half:
Driffield started brightly. The midfield quartet of Bella, Charlotte, Fi, and Amber orchestrated play, carving out early chances in the D. Up front, Bry, Bron, and Hannah were asking questions — unfortunately, Wakefield’s keeper had decided today was her personal audition for Team GB.

Wakefield tried the occasional fast break, but it was light work for the defensive trio of Ash, Drew, and Vic, who robbed attackers and redistributed the ball like they were running a hockey Ponzi scheme.

Then came magic: a telepathic connection between Charlotte and Hannah, resulting in a delicious through ball and an even sexier chip that… narrowly missed. Tragic. Poetry. Pain.

Driffield refused to be denied. Charlotte sliced through the D and coolly slipped the ball between the keeper’s legs to make it 1–0. Clinical. Filthy. Beautiful.

Multiple short corners followed, but Wakefield packed the D like it was Black Friday at Aldi. Despite relentless pressure, the keeper somehow kept everything out — suspicious ?

As halftime approached, Wakefield unleashed their super sub:
✨ the umpire ✨

A series of “interesting” decisions followed, resulting in Driffield’s first green card. Special mention to Hannah, who was carded for… shooting? While being tackled from the wrong side? Clearly, their defender has been watching too much of the Six Nations. Solidarity.

Halftime: 1–0. Tactical team talk and Haribo restored calm.

Second Half:
Wakefield’s 13 players had other ideas. Driffield pushed on and were rewarded. Slick midfield play saw Bron receive the ball on the right of the D, determined to add to the ever-growing Bran (Bry, Bron, Hannah, Han) dynasty of goals and assists. She swept it across goal to Bry, who cricket-struck it into the backboard like she was born holding a bat. 2–0. Scenes.

Then the rain arrived — yes, kids, pathetic fallacy — and with it, Wakefield’s pressure. Kat stepped up with a series of vital saves, keeping Driffield in control as the game tightened.

Wakefield pulled one back after a quick break. 2–1.

Driffield dominated the remainder of the half: short corners, shots whistling wide, mounting frustration — particularly at one Wakefield centre back whose main tactic seemed to be aerial evacuation. Bron eventually decided violence was the answer and charged her down, earning a ball to the arm… and a green card for appealing. Naturally.
Down to 10, Driffield somehow played their best hockey of the match. Intercepts flying, mids stepping, forwards pressing. Back to 11, the pressure continued, but the finish wouldn’t come.

Then came theatrics. Charlotte executed a perfect shave tackle, only for the recipient — clearly a footballer — to clutch her face like she’d been sniped from the stands. Ronaldo would’ve stood and applauded.

A messy break led to Wakefield’s second goal, courtesy of the boot of another player destined for the Premier League. The umpire nearest the ball stopped time for a full minute debating if it was a goal. Eventually: goal. 2–2.

Shortly after, Bry received a yellow card. For what? We may never know.

Driffield pushed until the final whistle, camped in the Wakefield half, creating chances but unable to find a winner. Frustrating result — but plenty of fire heading into next week.

Silver lining: hands down the best match teas of the season.
