The first game of the season always brings excitement and anticipation, with both teams wanting to start on the right foot. It was a fiercely contested match right from the start and at half time the score was still 0-0 after end to end encounters. Half time allowed the Ladies to regroup and strategize. We knew we needed to keep up the intensity.
York put a lot of pressure on our midfield and defence at the beginning of the second half, which led to them scoring the first goal. However, Driffield then showed great resilience, returning the work rate and attacking hard at the other end. Driffield stepped up and put pressure on the York defensive line. These efforts paid off when they won a short corner. Ashley Oliver stepped up to strike the ball, which resulted in a save from the keeper, but the ball fell right back to her stick, and this time, she made no mistake, firing it hard into the left corner of the goal! The score was now 1-1. Driffield kept pushing hard, a great ball from the left by Captain Fiona Tuplin was sent across the face of the goal, helped along by a touch from Emily Elliott, which found Bry Holtby on the far post, who slotted it home! We were now up 2-1 and were determined to keep it that way. Tight, disciplined in defence kept York at bay, and they struggled to find the equalizer.
The final whistle went, and the team were delighted to secure the first three points of the season!
A huge well done to Bronwyn, who was deservedly named Girl of the Game on her birthday! And this week's Donkey of the Game award goes to Andrina.
A brilliant start to the season, team!
