On Saturday the 21st of October, the weather had settled but a storm was brewing when Driffield Ladies 1's stepped onto their home pitch against Sheffield 1's.
The tempo was set from the warm up, positive energy and lots of chat. Driffield started strong with some great play, catching the opposition by surprise. The Driffield defence cleared the ball from an early attack which was distributed across the pitch to the midfield and down the line to the forwards. A perfectly executed cross to Hannah Horsley saw Driffield took an early lead, 1-0, only three minutes in.
Driffield continued with the same intensity however an unfortunate break from the Sheffield attack saw the scoreline change to 1-1. The home side reset and continued to put the pressure on the Sheffield defence but to no avail. Shortly before the half time whistle, the opposition capitalised on a quick break leaving the home side 1 goal down.
After a positive half time team talk, Driffield came out strong into what turned out to be an end to end half. A momentary laspe of concentration resulted in a third goal for Sheffield. Despite some tireless work from the midfield and attack peppering the Sheffield defence, Driffield went unrewarded. Some strong and tactical defence work kept Sheffield and their numerous penalty corners at bay for much of the second half leaving the final score at 1-3.
Another promising performance for the Ladies 1's in this strong league, hopefully it will be a win in two weeks time against Whitley Bay & Tynemouth.
Girlie of the game went to Holly Snaith.
