Driffield ladies hosted their first home game of the season against a well established Newcastle Ladies within the North Premiere league.

Driffield started strong and held their own from the start as Newcastle pressed early from the first whistle. Driffield defence of Vikki Bannister, Newly Wed Ashley Oliver (nee Gate) and Holly Snaith fought hard, Sibelle Baz in goal made some awesome saves and took a numerous strikes before Newcastle gained the lead to 1-0.

Driffield’s mids, Vice Captain Kate Moore, Charlotte Braidwood-Smith worked well within the middle of the pitch and distributed the balls to forwards with a few chances, Emma Speake sent the ball into Hannah Horsley who’d unfortunately became too accustomed to the crossbar challenge missing Driffield chance of equalising the game.

Some misunderstandings in the D saw Newcastle with a flick but Baz was too quick and made a stonking save. Newcastle made some really good play across the width and pressing into the Driffield D and once again finding the back of the goal.

A team talk at half time saw Driffield come back fighting and not giving up easily, putting some great balls into the D and giving Newcastle some worried faces. Some lovely balls down the left from Lucy Russell and an aerial from Vicky Scott to Rebecca Lindsay, who fought her way over to the right side passing it onto the stick skills of Frankie Marsh. A solid drive up the right found Captain Bry Holtby waiting eagerly at the P spot.

The keeper stopped her strike and gave Speake another opportunity. Sadly she had been watching Horsley play and found the post and Driffield were denied again.

Newcastle were a lovely opposition and on this occasion victorious but Driffield will continue to put up a fight and are getting stronger. We will be measuring the width and height of the goals before our next game.
