After last Saturdays fabulous team performance Driffield Ladies 1s were keen to repeat again this week. Captain Charlotte and manager Steve re-iterated the message to keep possession and move the ball quickly, but most of all enjoy the hockey.

The first few minutes saw both teams sounding each other out with lots of the play in the middle of the field. The midfield three of Keira, Rosie and Vicky S were working hard to break down the Boston Spa possession. With patience key, the defence of Holly, Vicki B, Ash and Gemma T were moving the ball well, when a slick passing move from back to front ended in a smart finish from close in by Vicky S after a goal mouth scramble!

Confidence was now key, and Driffield were keeping the ball well, but Boston Spa were hassling everything and managed to have a few attacks on goal, saved consistently by Sibelle in the Driffield Goal. Soon after, great running and interchange play by forwards Charlotte, Emma S and Bry opened up the Boston Spa defence allowing Rosie to fire in the second to bring the score to 2-0 in Driffield’s favour.

Half time soon came with no further score. The message was more of the same, good pace, speed and manage the game to the end.

With both teams attacking at every opportunity, short corners were conceded regularly but the defences held fast to keep the score at 2-0. Driffield looked the more likely to score, and soon after a neatly worked short corner with Emma, Charlotte and Gemma allowed Bry to nip in and deflect the ball wide of the keeper to make the score 3-0! Substitutes Emily C and Emily B were working hard to keep the momentum in our favour whenever they were utilised allowing Driffield’s Rosie hit the post with a great long range strike.

Some great blocks and saves from home keeper Sibelle, kept the umpires and the crowd on their toes. Boston Spa weren’t giving up without a fight, and certainly kept the pressure on, managed superbly by the Driffield’s defence. It wasn’t long before another superb interchange between the midfield and the forwards allowed Bry to slot home a neatly worked opening!

With the final score of 4-0 to Driffield, the ladies can reflect on another solid team performance keeping us well placed in the league.

Girlie of the game was Bry Sykes (two in a row, well done) with goalkeeper Sibelle receiving the most donkey votes!
