Wakefield 2 - unfortunately Wakefield thought we were playing rugby on Sunday afternoon… always a dirty opposition home or away… even more disgusting when the umpires and the crowd bully your youngest players. They had also managed to manipulate the rearrangement of the match to their advantage. They had no game on Saturday and this was reflected in how the game panned out.
Driffield thwarted many an attack in the first half, and before the half time whistle Ashley Gate scored a great penalty corner to put Driffield up 1-0 at halftime. Not long had the second half started and Charlotte Braidwood-Smith won a short corner (on the 3rd foul in the D); beautifully converted by Bry Holtby on the p-spot from Gemma Tuplin’s superb disguised pass. Then the Wakefield fouls really started, Bry Holtby taken out en route to goal with no consequences for the fouler, Gemma Tuplin rugby tackled off the ball, again with no consequences, and our youngest player bullied by the unpleasant Wakefield crowd. They really did stoop low to get back into the game. Their 3rd goal came when a Driffield player was on the floor injured and time should have been stopped, but of course it was not stopped.
Their last goal was a fair goal and worth applause, the Driffield legs were tiring after a double header, but the behaviour of their players, umpires and spectators was bewildering. Good effort girls, nice to get out of Wakefield (just about) intact.
