Driffield ladies 1sts travelled to Boston Spa on Saturday. Sitting 5 places below Driffield in the league did not guarantee any suggestion as to how the opposition would be so skipper Braidwood-Smith had 2 formations up her sleeve to keep Driffield's position up the table.
The first half started off solid with possession of the ball being the strong focus of the game. Controlled crosses around the back line of Snaith, K Moore, Gate and Bannister kept Boston Spa at bay looking for clean passes through to Tuplin, Dinsdale-Young, A Moore and Scott. Boston Spas defence were able to keep Driffield out of the D for the time despite the speedy legs of Holtby and Braidwood-Smith opening up opportunities. Boston Spa made a break for Driffield's defence wall and a short corner was awarded but Young's keeper skills kept them from finding the back board first time, however an interesting divot in the pitch was to Boston's advantage and raised the ball up for them to smack over the line...would have been an impressive lacrosse goal!
Driffield stayed strong and made some nice attacks towards Boston's D and some questionable umpiring awarded Driffield with a flick, reason still unknown. But without questioning Captain Braidwood-Smith stood up with her eyes on the prize. Sadly the combination of beautiful British weather and choice of AstroTurf topping meant that the connection slipped from the stick and went wide of the goal. With another transfer opportunity Boston took another short corner and were able to slip the ball in leaving the first half up 2-0.
A quick team talk from coach guru Gate kept spirits up and determined as ever Driffield started the second half dominant. Marsh and Hotlby were making good use of the right wing and transferring the ball into Boston's D became more frequent. Driffield had some short corners but bobbled the chance at a blast on the backboard. Boston's keeper was proving a hard battle to beat. After a green card took Driffield down to 10 players there was more determination than ever to earn a goal but alas it was not to be this week.
On to the next Saturday at home vs Durham City at 2.30pm.
