Great Half of the Season

Having finished the league games for the year the week before and having had an incredulous match, bizarre umpiring and losing the win in the final seconds. Drawing 3-3 (goals from Keira, Harriet and Henri) but still sitting at the top of the league into the new year.

However, now the cup game that took the Ladies 1’s to Leeds Adel again! Where changing facilities are in need of an update and we had a near catastrophe just getting to the pitch.

The weather was raw from the start, all but one player wore their sweatshirts under their shirts just to stave off the biting wind and rain. Driffield were the favourites for this match as Leeds Adel 3’s are 2 leagues below Driffield, but every game is a tough one.

Driffield started brightly and had most of the possession but goals were going unsecured. Eventually after a lovely switch of play from Henri Williams to Holly Snaith who in turn set up Vicky Scott for a mazy run down the left passing to Ash Gate at the top of the D. Ash still had work to do and successfully found Harriet Dobson on the left post for the break of the deadlock.

This spurred Adel to up their game and Driffield needed to defend well to keep their attempts at bay. Molly Coombs and Rose Backhouse in the middle of the pitch worked well in pairs and thwarted many attacks and the odd one that broke through was blocked by Kat Young in goal. There was a moment in play when ALL players had to stop and shield their faces from the sharp peppering to the faces from a hail storm.

The second half was still in the same vein with Driffield attacking in numbers, Emily Williamson and Fiona Tuplin were linking up beautifully in the 23 yard area and Keira Dinsdale-Young and Eve Naylor were stopping any loose balls from travelling out of our half and relentlessly putting the ball back in for more chances.

A more realistic scoreline was finally recorded and Harriet claimed her hat trick with 2 late goals in the last ten minutes of the game. So Driffield Ladies 1’s plough on in the cup and we hope they can continue to impress in the league into the second half of the season, the double is still there for the taking.

Donkey went to Henri Williams for forgetting her stick! and Harriet claimed Girlie for her well taken goals.
