Yorkshire Cup Game - Drew 1-1, Lost 3-2 on flicks.

Driffield Ladies 1st V Sheffield Hallum 2nd’s

Driffield Ladies faced Sheffield on Sunday in their first cup game of 2018/2019 season. After such a positive start to the season the team started on a high with buckets of energy.
In the first half Driffield controlled the game from the start with some great possession play. The midfielders Kiera Dinsdale-Young, Gemma Tuplin, Steph Robinson and Hannah Horsley were showing off their skills by passing the ball from back to front with ease and creating multiple goal scoring opportunities. Fowards Ash Gate and Fiona Tuplin continued to make great runs, putting pressure on the oppositions defence and creating many opportunities in the D. The teams hard work soon resulted in Driffield gaining a short corner. The ball was strongly injected by Hannah Horsley, where Henri Williams struck the ball perfectly across the goal keeper to the right hand post where Kiera Dinsdale-Young slipped the ball into the goal. Driffield continued to push in the first half with some great runs down the left and right hand wings by Eve Naylor and Vicky Scott. In the last 5 minutes of the first half Sheffield really pushed for an equalising goal. This resulted in Driffield’s back line being put to the test with some excellent tackles being made rom Henri Williams, Molly Combs and Lucinda Collinge and amazing stops from captain Lucy Wilson.

Going into the second half, everything was looking good for Driffield. The entire team continued to show possession and maintained their strong passing right from defence all the way to the forwards. With 10 minutes to spare Sheffield made a break into the D and managed to win themselves a short corner. Despite great running and stops by the Driffield defence Sheffield managed to slip the ball into the goal. This didn't stop Driffield as they continued to pass the ball through the midfield to the forwards. However, as the whistle blew the score was still 1-1. This could only mean one thing. Penalty flicks.

Captain Lucy Wilson was in the zone and managed make 3 sublime stops for the penalty flicks. Fiona Tuplin, Gemma Tuplin, Ash Gate, Hannah Horsely and Lucy Attree stepped forward to take the flicks for Driffield. Gemma and Ash managed to match Sheffield’s 2 goals on penalty flicks. This resulted in a sudden death. Sheffield stepped forward again and managed to just slip one into the goal. Unfortunately, Driffield were not able to match this. This meant that Sheffield went on to the win the cup game and progress to the next round.
Although it was a loss for the cup game, the team have their sights on the league and aim to the maintain their winning streak.

Donkey of the match goes to Steph Robinson for flowery socks and sliders. Girlie of the game goes to Lucy Wilson for many amazing stops.
