This weekend saw Driffield Ladies 2s host Hull Hawks in the divisional cup, eager to continue the impressive vein of form over the last few weeks.

With the midfield of Burgess, Bryan and Teasdale breaking up Hull plays early doors, it didn’t take long for debutant Thompson to pounce on a back post ball to slot home an early goal. With the midfield of Gillingham, Moore, Robinson and Blythe moving the ball quickly with great purpose it wasn’t long before Lee went on a mazy run, somehow managing to dummy the keeper and slot home from one yard out to make it 2-0. Hull changed formation a little and started to gain more possession but the defence of Stork, Watt and Calder stopped any forward momentum, with great support from Burton in goal. Half time came with a solid 2-0 lead.

Half time team talk from Coach Gate asking for continued quick movement and to keep up the pressure. Cue a repeat of the first half, after some great skills by Bryan allowed Thompson a repeat of her first half opener, to nudge home the third goal soon after the restart. This bolstered the whole team again who pressed with great determination, allowing S Blythe to go on a mesmerising dribbling run - to finish off her sub lime run with a goal, 4-0.

Typically Hull then got the bit between their teeth and started to gain a lot of possession and yardage, but midfielders Teasdale, Bryan, Moore and Robinson ran their socks off stopping the Hull attack time after time. With Driffield under a bit of pressure, a quick ball out of defence and some good interchange play between Bryan, Stork and Moore allowed Burgess to drive the ball forwards unleashing a shot low to the keepers left, 5-0. With time running out, a penalty corner routine allowed Katie Lee to deflect a well worked play under the keeper for a 6-0 victory. The final whistle arrived with no more goals for either side.

Congratulations to joint ‘Girlies’ S Blythe and S Bryan, for continuously driving the team forward and causing the Hull defence onto the back foot for long periods of the game. Debutant B Thompson picking up the ‘Donkey award’.

Thanks to umpires Isla and Russ for controlling the game and letting both teams play hockey, and The Spread Eagle for after match refreshments.
