This Saturday saw Driffield Ladies Second Team play at home against Hull University. It was an early push back and the sun was shining, which was a nice change in comparison to the last few wet weekend games we have had. The Hull team was depleted, with only 9 players on the pitch, but Driffield started hard, as did not want to take the win for granted. Driffield had most of the possession in the first half, with great switching across the back from Charlotte Smith, Mags Purnell and Ellen Calder. The midfield remained strong with Molly Coombs and Ashley Gate making strong tackles and linking passes into the attacking third. The first goal by Lauren Dinsdale eventually came, which saw Driffield gain in confidence. Hull continued to flood their defending D with all of their 9 players, making it difficult to find any space to get the ball across the line. Following a flurry of short corners, Emily Williamson managed to get a shot on goal which deflected into the net, making it 2-0 at half time. This score line did not reflect how well Driffield had played, and it would have been very different if it wasn't for the fantastic multiple saves by the Hull keeper.
Driffield continued to dominate in the second half with great runs up the right wing by Katie Percival and Chloe Rhodes. Emily Williamson and Rachel Kendall used their speed against a tired Hull defence, and Bryony Sykes caused Hull ongoing problems, pressing hard and blocking the ball on their defensive hit outs. This continuous pressure caused Hull to concede 5 goals this half, 4 from Di Levitt and 1 from Rachel Kendall, who converted the opportunities they had. Driffield's keeper Becks remained untested throughout the game, but continued to cheer the team on from the back.
The final score was 7-0, which means Driffield remain 6th in the Premier Division of the Yorkshire Hockey league. Driffield should go into next week with confidence, for what will be a much more challenging game against Pocklington.
I would like to thank Driffield Ladies First Team for coming to cheer us on from the side lines, Danny for the on pitch coaching, Bob at the spread Eagle for the pre match Rugby and our sponsors Yorkwold Pigpro.
