We started the game fuelled with Jaffa cakes and jelly babies. York 2s, who topped the league last season started strong getting 2 opening goals in the first few minutes of the match, they were skillful and fast.
Despite this Driffield 2s put in a valiant fight, the defending line, Ellen Calder, Charlotte Smith, Mags Purnell and Helen Holdsworth, put in several strong tackles (even though they were distracted by charlottes poor choice of sports bra). The back line was lead by 2s debutant Katherine Young in goal, who made several excellent diving saves limiting, the best team we’ve played so far this season, to 3 goals before half time.
The second half was much stronger, despite the lack of oranges and grapefruit, usually provided by Nicola Guthrie.
The midfielders, Bry Sykes, Kate Moore, Alice Walker and Nicola Guthrie put in a lot of miles, tracking back to make crucial tackles, whilst counter attacking using effective 1-2s to pressure the York defences.
York managed two further goals but were held at 5-0 despite going a man down for 5 minutes as Lauren Dinsdale-Young got The ladies 2’s first yellow card of the season (also earning herself donkey of the game).
Driffield were unlucky to score, as the forwards Kathryn Bumby, Rach Kendal and Lauren Dinsdale-Young, worked well together, driving the the base line with speed and attacking the York D.
Next week Driffield will play Leeds L3’s away and will be looking to improve their track record, no doubt coming out fighting.
Thanks to Umpires for keeping the peace, and of course to Bob and The Spread Eagle for an excellent cheesy lasagne.
Final score: Driffield L2’s 0-5 City of York L2’s
