This Saturday saw Driffield Ladies Second Team playing their arch rivals Kingston upon Hull 2’s at home on what was a sunny Autumnal day. Driffield had a slow start with Hull making some excellent passes, supported by driving runs through midfield. This saw Hull spending most of their time in their attacking third, taking balls quickly and maintaining the pressure on Driffield's defence. Driffield absorbed this well with Charlotte Smith, Mags Purnell, Ellen Calder and Helen Holdsworth maintaining control at the back whilst having to defend multiple short corners.
Driffield struggled to get the ball out of the back, and after a period of continuous pressure, Hull scored from a deflected shot on goal making it 1-0 after 23 minutes. Driffield did not let this affect their game though, and remained disciplined throughout leading to multiple opportunities to score before half time, with Kathryn Bumby and Chloe Rhodes making fast, driving runs past Hull's defenders into the attacking D. Driffield settled more into their game and started to pass the ball around, gaining confidence in their new formation.
After a motivating half time team talk from Captain Charlotte Smith, Driffield came out hard. There was excellent passing in midfield by Lauren Dinsdale-Young and Bryony Sykes, and this combined with Ellen Calder's tenacious tackling and Nicola Guthrie's man on man marking, enabled Driffield to take control.
This led to a quick goal by Di Levitt with a cheeky flick past the keeper into the net. Driffield continued to have most of the play until a quick break led to a defensive short corner. A hard strike and deflection on goal by Hull saw a penalty flick awarded. This thankfully was saved by Becks Lalor's cat like reactions, with the Driffield Team breathing a sigh of relief.
Driffield continued to dominate in the second half, with further attacks from Lucinda Collinge, who was in top form, down the right wing. Further goals at 51 and 66 minutes by Di Levitt and Kathryn Hardwick hit Hull hard, and ensured that Driffield took away the 3 points.
This was a fantastic second game of the season, which really was a team effort, and is hopefully the start of a winning streak. Many thanks to the umpires Tony Usher and Russ Lee who made sure the crowd did not get too rowdy!
Final score: Driffield L2’s 3-1 Kingston upon Hull L2’s.
Girlie of the game: Di Levitt for her dominance in the D and goal scoring ability.
