On 26th Oct Driffield Ladies 1st team travelled to Harrogate in appalling weather. Harrogate where sitting only one place below Driffield in the table so this was going to be a tough match.
The game set off at a good pace with end to end play, both Harrogate and Driffield having good spells of possession. The difference been when Driffield had the ball Harrogate had 3 of their player’s pressurising the ball which at first caused a bit of panic but slowly Driffield started to move the ball more freely around the back and through mid-field giving the forwards some good balls to work with and creating a few good chances. This is how the game progressed throughout the first half and at the half time whistle Driffield’s Manager Gemma Tuplin had only a few things to say to set up for a good second half.
Driffield started to boss the game a bit more in the second half with Eve Naylor, Rose Backhouse, Holly Snaith, Henri Williams and Lucinda Collinge pushing up from the back and move the ball at pace in abundance. The mid-field of Steph Robinson, Kate Moore, Vicki Scott and Kiera Dinsdale-Young worked really hard to keep possession and linked well with the forwards. Driffield finally got their break when Kiera D-Y drove the ball into the D and took a lovely reverse stick hit which rebounded off a Harrogate player into the path of Emma Speake who did a wonderful job of laying her stick down on the reverse for it to come off at the perfect angle, 1-0.
This ignited Harrogate who then had a very good 10 minute burst but the defence and GK Sibelle Baz did a great job of thwarting Harrogate’s advances. Driffield were not going to give this game up and began to really push for another goal, a mid field ball went out to Emma Speake who sent a great ball up to high forward Hannah Langley who took her chance and off set the GK then duly put it through her legs to put Driffield’s lead to 2-0. One or two more chances came through link play with Fiona Tuplin and Chloe Rhodes but the game ended at 2-0.
This was the best team performance of the season so far and the season is looking good for the ladies who are sitting pretty in third place at the moment.
Girlie of the game Emma Speake and Lucinda Collinge.
Donkey was shared between Fiona Tuplin- ‘what’s wrong with wearing Christmas socks in October’ and Chloe Rhodes who forgot something quite important!
