Driffield M1s welcomed North Shields M1s to the Leisure Centre knowing that only a win would be acceptable to keep the season momentum going having won just 2 games and drawn 3. The previous week’s trip up to Morpeth was a long day to come back with just a point from a 0-0 draw and the Woldsmen were hungry to get back to winning ways.
This desire was evident on the pitch from the off, with North Shield’s immediately rattled by the pace and fluidity of the Driffield style of play and it wasn’t long before Cherry opened the scoring with a fine individual goal. This set up the tone for the entire game as Driffield continued to dominate possession and by half time found themselves 6-0 up with another great goal from Cherry, 2 goals from Wallace (Including a top corner screamer) and a goal apiece for Martindale and Gate from a short corner.
Driffield were rampant and North Shields were going to have to dig deep in the second half just to stay in the game. However, there was no let up from the Woldsmen, who continued to play some top drawer hockey and were rewarded with more goals from a Shephard straight strike at a Short Corner, a great sliding deflected goal from Congiu at another Short Corner and two more great team goals for Wallace to convert to take his tally to 4 for the game. Wallace is really beginning to show that he knows where the back of the net is when given half a yard of space in the opposition D.
The only fly in the ointment for Driffield was that they ended up conceding a goal towards the end of the game after a North Shields player rolled the ball between the kickers of Falkingham in goal.
Driffield face old foes Brigg away next Saturday who are sitting in 2nd place in the league having won all their games so far. However, the Woldsmen will be confident they have the beating of any team in the league and will be going into the game full of confidence.
Thanks as always to shirt sponsor Yorkwold Pigpro and to the hospitality of the Spread Eagle.
