Driffield M1s (11) Vs Gateshead M1s (0)
Driffield welcomed Gateshead 1s to the Leisure Centre for the opening game of the season this week and the Woldsmen were looking forward to putting their pre-season preparations to the test.
However, Gateshead could only find 9 men for the game and so were always going to struggle against a full strength Driffield side. The visiting team battled valiantly for much of the game but Driffield were playing extremely well, moving the ball round the pitch with speed and constantly probing the Gateshead defence.
Inevitably the goals started to flow for the woldsmen and by the end of the game the Gateshead players had been run ragged and found themselves on the wrong side of a 11-0 score line. Mark Shepherd who has been moved into a centre forward role this season bagged himself a hatrick with the rest of the goals shared out between the captain Gate (1), the youngsters Needham (1) and Wallace (2) and the veterans Dewhirst (1), Cherry (2) and Robson (1). Indeed Wallace very nearly converted his hatrick in the last minutes of the game with a clever touch and volley which he didn’t quite execute.
Driffield have had to play 9 men teams before and struggled, so they will be very pleased to have dominated so effectively against Gateshead. It is also encouraging that so many of the players got on the score sheet and goes to show just how much of a threat the team is going to be this season with players in all areas quite capable of putting the ball into the back of the net.
Next week the woldsmen travel to Leeds Weetwood to play Leeds 3s and they will be relishing the opportunity to continue the momentum into that game. Thanks as always to shirt sponsor Yorkwold Pigpro and to the Spread Eagle for the hospitality.
