Never gave up.
On Sunday the U16 girls A team travelled to Wakefield to play in the 'finals' tournament. Driffield finished 7th in the Yorkshire league out of 24 teams and therefore had to play 3 of the best teams above them in their league which were Wakefield (who came top after the last 5 tournaments), York and Doncaster, not an easy task!
The 1st game was against City of York, this game could of gone either way with both teams having some good possession, unfortunately Yorks second short corner of the game resulted in a fine strike into the right corner of the goal, 1-0. The Driffield girls did not give up and after some lovely passing in the mid-field the girls found the back of the net 1-1. With not long to go it was all even and looking like a draw on the board, but York sneaked one in almost on the final whistle, 2-1.
The 2nd game was against Wakefield so no respite! Basic instructions were to stick tight on their attackers in the 23m defending area and stop them getting space. The girls were brilliant, the defence were solid for a full 23 minutes, unfortunately Wakefield were given a short corner in the dying minutes and a very good drag flick penetrated the Driffield goal, even though the keeper got her hand to it.
The last game of the day was against another big club, Doncaster. Fatigue was setting in and concentration is the first thing to go when you are tired and unfortunately although the girls played really well right until the end they on occasions were leaving their players and giving them much more space than they should of, which unfortunately resulted in a 2-0 defeat.
Coach Fiona Tuplin was not disappointed, in fact she was very proud of her players who gave everything and never gave up.
Big thanks to Yorkwold Pig Pro for the generous sponsorship for both the junior and senior sections of the club, all getting free shirts.
