Driffield 4 - Bingley bees 0
Driffield take the long drive to Ben Rhydding to take the win
Saturday 13th October, Driffield Ladies 3s took a very long drive to Ben Rhydding Hockey Club where they played against Bingley Bees 1s. Driffield were very aware this game was going to be physically demanding as Bingley Bees were demoted last season to division 3 but after an intense training session, working on last weeks mistakes, Driffield were determined for a win.
In the first half Driffield started immensely strong holding 90% of the possession in Bingley Bees half. Emily Williamson ran her socks off down the right wing as she broke through Bingleys defence several times as well as winning short corners for Driffield, to have a chance at taking the lead but Bingley were quick to defend not letting Driffield through. However Driffield’s Midfielders worked endlessly as Lauren Johnstone won many free hits, allowing Sarah Soanes to take advantage- striking the ball at goal as Debs Nelson deflected it into the bottom corner. Within minutes of the first goal Julie Pease was keen to get on the score sheet as she struck the ball past the goal keeper after many of her great shots were saved. At half time it was 2-0 and Driffield were off to a fantastic start.
During half time Debs Robinson gave her words of wisdom once again for the Driffield 3s as they took a breather and a drink before taking their lead further in the 2nd half.
The umpires whistle blew and the 2nd half was well under way as Holly Snaith and Captain- Meg Sellar held majority of the possession not allowing Bingley to get a touch on the ball. Driffield’s left wing back, Lucy Welburn, had a brilliant game as she drove the ball down the wing, hitting the ball into the D up to Debs Nelson- who once again tapped it over the line, scoring for Driffield. Heather Meason made some great runs playing as the wing back, she didn’t allow any of Bingley’s attack down the right hand side of the pitch.
Bingley Bees knew something had to change and became a lot more attacking as they won their first short corner of the game. However defenders: Sharon Falkingham and Kat Young stood their ground not allowing Bingley Bees to get a shot off at goal. This left Riona Welburn (GK) to direct the team from the back so Bingley wouldn’t gain anymore chances to try grasp a goal.
In the last 10 minutes of the game Driffield were eager for an even bigger win as Lucy Attree ran the ball from Driffield’s own half all the way up to Bingley Bees D. Bingley’s Goal Keeper came of her line allowing Lucy to slip the ball into the bottom left corner. This ended the game with a well deserved 4-0 win!
Next Saturday Driffield 3s play City of Yorks 4th team at 11am on their home turf. With having Saturdays win under their belt Driffield hope to have another successful week and get the points on the table they deserve.
