Driffield lose 5-1
By Megan Sellar
Saturday 6th October, Driffield 3s were set to play Wakefield 4s in their third game of the season. On the umpires first whistle, Driffield started well despite still learning the new team formation.
As the first half went on Rachel Kendall and Debs Nelson attacked endlessly as the whole team was desperately trying to break Wakefield’s back line of defence. Wendy Foster put the ball on a Wakefield’s foot and won a short corner for Driffield. Whilst Sarah Soanes injected to Julie Pease, Wakefield weren’t quick enough to react as Julie slipped it to Lucy Attree, who hit it into the bottom left corner making it 1-0. Wakefield were soon to fight back as in the last minute of the first half they broke through Driffield’s hard working defence: Sharon Falkingham, Kat Young and Lucy Welburn where they then equalised the game.
At half time Driffield spoke about what needed to be improved on and set out determined that their chances of winning were still within grasp. Wendy Gate helped with substitutions and coaching from the sideline due to an injury last season but Driffield 3s hope to have her back on the pitch soon!
The second half was well under way but Wakefield 4s were not stopping as they ran the length of the pitch numerous of times taking Driffield’s midfielders with them: Heather Measom, Holly Snaith and Meg Sellar, working them tirelessly. Riona Welburn (GK) made some great saves through the entire game as well as shouting at everyone to mark players when they weren’t being marked. Although everyone ran their socks off today, it just wasn’t enough as Wakefield never stopped attacking and took the win of 5-1.
This obviously isn’t the start of the season Driffield 3s were looking for but next week they will be working even harder, keeping their heads held high with hopes to get a result they will be happy with. They travel to Ben Rhydding Sports club on Saturday to take on Bingley Bees 1s.
Many thanks also go to the Bob and the team at the Spread Eagle for their post match refreshments.
