Driffield 3s Vs Ben Rhydding 4s
By Megan Sellar
On Saturday the newly promoted Driffield Ladies 3rd team started the season off with a solid 5-3 victory over a strong Ben Rhydding side. The ladies knew that the match would be tough and physically demanding but they stepped up their game playing their hearts out.
During the first half the ladies ran the length of the pitch numerous times, with the midfield of Heather Measom, Rachel Kendall and Sarh Soanes attacking as a pack and making a number of breaks through the Ben Rhydding defence, which paid off when Lauren Johnstone scored the opener. The opposition came back strong but with a solid defence of Kat Young, Sharon Falkingham and Lucy Welburn only one goal was conceded in the first half.
At half time the ladies were positive and knew that if they continued to press hard a victory could be in sight. The ladies continued to push and dig deep, with Wendy Foster running her socks off up and down the wing. The hard work paid off with Julie Pease and Emily Williamson adding to the score line and Lauren scoring another goal to give the Driffield ladies a brilliant scoring total of 5 goals. The Ben Rhydding ladies were not determined to give up and scored two more, however some super saves from keeper Riona Welburn they were held to 3 goals, which meant a secure Driffield win and brilliant start to the season.
A huge thanks to the fantastic Debs Robinson for her side line words of wisdom and also to Susie Naylor for her continued support. Thank you to Bob at the Spread Eagle for his delicious post-match refreshments and to our match umpires. Next week the ladies take on Tadcaster Magnets.
