On Saturday Driffield Ladies 3rd travelled across to Horsforth to meet their opposition Otliensians 1.
With a minimal squad of 12; one of who should have stayed in her sick-bed, it was going to be a tough morning.
During the warm-up Driffield tried not to be intimidated by the 15 strong opposition + coach and a crowd of supporters that would have been more at home on the football terraces!
The Otliensians had 1st pushback and very quickly pushed Driffield into defence. 3 minutes into the game the Umpire awarded a “Bully” at the top of our D. Those of you that remember grass hockey when the Bully always started a match, it is now rarely used unless play has been stopped for some reason. Our Bully was awarded because the Umpire couldn’t decide what to do !
Sharon Falkingham stood forward, won the ball and cleared it from our end of the pitch.
The Otley ladies were very well drilled and quick, swamping our goal area. Shanie Burton standing in for our GK did a stirling job in blocking a couple of shots on goal and fullbacks Falkingham and Morgan took a number of knocks on knees and shins.
20 minutes and Driffield conceded the 1st goal from an attacker running in and striking the ball from the top of the D.
Driffield tried to fight back, pushing up the wings with Bella Thompson and Hannah Percival making some good runs through to the back line but Julie Pease & Maya Brown were unlucky not to score.
The Otley ladies played a couple of high forwards which split our midfielders and were able to intercept too many of our passes.
Otley scored again from a text book pairing down the center of the pitch, a quick double pass to draw our Keeper off the line and then slipping it into the corner of the goal.
Driffield didn’t give up and we battled on trying to find our form and fluidity but it just wasn’t happening today.
Otley scored their 3rd goal from a Penalty Corner awarded just before the half time whistle.
The half-time team chat and input from the GK and wingbacks and Driffield looked the stronger team in the 2nd half but legs were tiring and Otley had plenty of fresh legs stood on the sideline.
Bella Thompson had a good chance at scoring when she powered up the left wing, beating the Otley fullbacks but was then heavily taken down by the Otley GK.
Hannah Southwell and Kate Leeson in midfield retained possession of the ball long enough to find some clear passes to Maya Brown on the right. Maya worked hard to get Driffield on the score line but a couple of shots wide and one off the post stamped on Driffield hopes.
Otley were able to score another two goals before the final whistle but Driffield ladies gave their all and next week have a home match against York.
Player of our game was voted Shanie Burton for her solid Goal Keeping skills.
