MATCH REPORT: 16th FEBRUARY

A sunny Saturday for Driffield Ladies 2s as they took on Pocklington Ladies 1s, at Driffield’s Sports Centre. With both teams sitting tightly towards the top of the table and the rivalry between the teams setting the atmosphere, it was going to be a tough game.

Pocklington had won first push back and eagerly set the pace of the game after being awarded a short corner instantly. However Becks Lalor (GK) saved the straight strike with the help of: Helen Holdsworth and Ellen Calder, making some great clearances throughout the game. Driffield quickly reacted to the hit out and made a break through Pocklington where they then found a foot in the D. This was a perfect opportunity for Driffield to take the lead. Nicola Guthrie took the strike from the top of the D whilst Chloe Rhodes sat patiently on the post and slipped it into the back of the net. Driffield were now 1-0 up but Pocklington were not going to give up.

Tensions were running high on the pitch as Pocklington were desperate to find an equaliser. Attacking constantly in Driffields D they managed to find the back of the net. The game was now 1-1 and Driffield were determined to win. Charlotte Smith, sat at the bottom of the diamond, distributed the ball out wide to: Lauren Dinsdale Young, Di Levvit and Jenny Dawson to attack up the wings.

A few moments later after working so hard to find another goal, Driffield were awarded with a short corner. Kathryn Bumby caught the rebound and scored the winning goal of the game before half time!

After a quick team chat and into the second half, Driffield were adamant they were going to come away with the 3 points. Every player ran the length of the pitch numerous of times in the end-to-end to game trying to hold possession of the ball.

Pocklington had many chances to bring the game back but defenders: Mags Purnell and Sophie Watson stood their ground- not allowing them to get a shot off at goal. The intensity grew throughout the second half as you could see the fight between both teams to get what they work hard for in training. The final whistle blew and Driffield had won with a well deserved 2-1 win against a strong side.
