Draw

Another cold Saturday for the Ladies 2’s as they played against Bridlington 1’s on home turf this weekend. Having not played Bridlington this season Driffield went into the derby with full determination to get 3 points on the table.

Driffield started with push back setting the pace of the game. Driffield’s forwards; Lauren Dinsdale-Young, Lucy Attree and Jenny Dawson pressed high, blocking all of Bridlington’s opportunities to take their 23 hits successfully. Beth Dinsdale-Young, sitting at the top of the diamond, tested Bridlington’s defensive line as she transferred the ball straight up the pitch into the attacking D. Kathryn Bumby picked up the ball and was one on one with the Goal Keeper, and with a quick V drag and a flick- Driffield were now 1-0 up!

Tensions were running high as Bridlington were desperate to try equalise the game but from some questionable umpiring decisions leaving both teams short on players after being carded, a ridiculous amount of times, Bridlington were unable to bring the game back.

After a quick team chat and into the second half, Driffield were eager to finish the game how they started. Nicola Guthrie and Mags Purnell, working as a perfect pair, stopped Bridlington from attacking as they made quick passes to the wingers; Lauren Johnstone and Chloe Rhodes. To try hold the possession of the game.

The intense game was testing both teams fitness and, in some cases, temperament but the Driffield side managed to remain their cool until an unlucky flick was given against them. Becks Lalor (GK) had apparently trapped the ball in desperation for Bridlington to not score however already making some great saves throughout the game, Driffield had to face the flick and bring the game back.

With only 15 minutes left of the end to end game Driffields defenders: Charlotte Smith, Helen Holdsworth and Ellen Calder did an incredible job of clearing the ball from the defensive D and giving Driffield some great opportunities in attempt to win the game. The game ended with Bridlington being awarded a short corner and despite Driffield being penalised 2 defenders, Bridlington were still unable to take advantage of this.

The game ended as a 1-1 draw despite the aggression and the umpiring decisions. Driffield Ladies 2’s travel to Northallerton next week in hope to bring home a win. Thank you to Bob at the Spread Eagle for his post-match refreshments and to Yorkwold Pigpro for their continued sponsorship.
