Driffield L2 1 - 1 Lindum L2

The first game back after a month off for the Christmas period was always going to be a challenge; particularly when the ladies were facing the young squad from over the Humber, Lindum 2’s.

From the starting whistle Driffield dominated the game holding possession for the most part. However, Lindum’s impenetrable defensive line prevented forwards Chloe Rhodes, Di Levitt, Lauren Johnstone and Co-Captain Jenny Dawson from taking shots on goal. A couple of short corners gave Driffield the opportunities they had been missing; Lauren Dinsdale-Young was confidently striking at top D but Driffield’s efforts were thwarted by a solid Lindum back line no matter where they turned.

Hard work from midfielders Nicola Guthrie, Beth Dinsdale-Young, Sophie Watson and Bry Sykes ensured Lindum had few options when they were in possession of the ball but a rapid counterattack caught the girls off guard and found Lindum in the Driffield D. Here they earned themselves a penalty corner which they converted into a goal slipping it between keeper, Becks Lalor, and the post putting them ahead of the blues just before the half time whistle.

Half time oranges and a pep talk from team coach Danny Bell and the Captains sent the girls back on revived with a fighting mentality.

Into the second half, there was no let up. The intense game was testing both teams fitness but Driffield made the most of having a full squad rolling subs continually to keep legs fresh.

As the game continued, the Driffield defence, Mags Purnell, Helen Holdsorth, Ellen Calder and Co-Captain Charlotte Smith played superbly; the Lindum team barely getting a look in on the Driffield 23 yard line. This solidity gave the home side a chance to equalise; Kathryn Bumby taking the strike top D hammering the Lindum backboard to bring the teams back level. Both teams fought hard up to the final whistle but, unfortunately, the Driffield girls were unable to bag another goal to take them to victory and the whistle blew on a 1-1 score.

Next week the ladies face local rivals Bridlington 1’s at home. This fierce local derby will be one not to miss!
