Driffield L2 1 - 1 Lindum L2
By Charlotte Smith
A Draw for Driffield L2’s
The Driffield L2’s ventured, bravely, over the Humber this week to face Lindum L2’s. Having a mottled history when it comes to facing this team in the past, the girls were aware that there was a challenging game ahead.
Driffield started with the push back setting the pace and intensity of the game from the off. The Driffield forwards; Lauren Dinsdale-Young, Bry Sykes, Di Levitt, Lauren Johnstone immediately pressing high into the home teams half testing the defensive line. However, Lindum were not phased and stole possession to instigate a quick counterattack on Driffield. This was not a problem for the, ever strong, Driffield defensive line; Ellen Calder, Lucy Welburn and co-captain Charlotte Smith who disarmed the Lindum offence and quickly redistributed the ball.
The end to end play continued, midfielders Nicola Guthrie, Beth Dinsdale-Young and Alice Walker putting in the miles to ensure there was no breakdown of strength within the Driffield structure. This payed off when a drive down the right wing from Chloe Rhodes and some quick thinking attacking play found Kathryn Bumby at the perfect position for a strike; this was not wasted and Bumby put our ladies ahead of the game, score 1-0 to Driffield.
The battle continued in a similar vain up to the half time whistle. Supporting the girls, as usual, injured co-captain Jenny Dawson gave encouragement to the team at half time sending them back on revived.
Into the second half, there was no let up. The intense game was testing both teams fitness and, in some cases, temperament but the Driffield squad kept their cool making some promising leads building from the midfield but they were unable to find a goal.
As the game wore on, despite valiant efforts from all sides, the Lindum forwards spotted a chink in the Sky Blue armour and took the opportunity; their swift attack and a chip around the Driffield keeper, Riona Welburn, saw the home team level the score.
The Driffield girls, despite some spectacular attempts (and misses!) were unable to bag another goal to take them to victory and the whistle blew on a 1-1 score. This is enough for the ladies to maintain their position at 3rd in the league but they will be looking for a win next week when they face Hull Ladies 2’s back on home turf, 12.30pb.
Final Score: Driffield L2’s 1 - 1 Lindum L2’s
