Driffield L2’s Narrowly Beaten by City of York 2’s

It was a, later than usual, 15.30pb for the L2’s this week away in York, but at least this gave time for the weather to clear leaving them a fresh but sunny slot to play.

The girls went out expecting a challenge from the York 2nd team and they were not wrong. Both teams came out strong demonstrating exactly why they are sitting high in the league table. Driffield fought hard; forwards Ash Cowton, Di Levitt, Lauren Dinsdale-Young and Chloe Rhodes working with the midfield Nicola Guthrie, Bry Sykes and Beth Dinsdale-Young to create opportunities up the pitch but they were met by a strong York defence who were closing down the Driffield attack.

A rapid break at 20 minutes saw Lauren Dinsdale-Young drive the base line dropping the ball to Di Levitt in the York D. Di drew the defence and slipped the ball left to Chloe Rhodes who scored from the ugly zone, as perfected at training!

This fired up the York squad who were hot off the mark with a reaction; a deflection behind Driffield Keeper, Riona Welburn, just 5 minutes after Driffield’s goal saw the teams equalise into half time.

Positivity reined in the team talks and the girls went back out fighting into another half of nail biting hockey. The Driffield defence; Charlotte Smith (C), Sophie Watson, Mags Purnell, Helen Holdsworth and Riona Welburn (GK) battled hard keeping the York attackers at bay until a lucky break created an opportunity for the home team; one they did not waste, scoring to take them ahead of the Driffield ladies.

Our girls fought hard and worked fantastically together as a team to try and get back at York but they were unlucky and did not equalise before the final whistle blew, a score of 2-1 to York.

A draw would have been a more fitting result for the team but they hold their heads high as they put in a fantastic performance and maintain their position at 3rd in the league. Next week the ladies face the sister team to this weeks rivals, City of York 3’s on home turf, 12.30pb.
