Win to finish the season
By Henri Williams
Driffield Ladies 1st team v Leeds Uni 2nd
For the final game of the season the ladies travelled to Leeds Westwood to play Leeds Uni 2nd's team. Driffield needed to get a win to put the pressure on Harrogate who also needed to win or drew to stay top of the Premier Yorkshire League.
The game started well for the ladies, putting pressure on the Uni girls defence from the start. Keira Dinsdale-Young doing very well in a slightly higher position than normal and Ash Gate and Fiona Tuplin making some good runs to create space for the mid-field of Steph Robinson and Gemma Tuplin, to get the ball through to them. Quite early on in the game Driffield had a quick surge into the D and were rewarded with a short corner. Lucinda Collinge produced a very accurate drag out and with a good stick stop and an excellent strike from Henri Williams producing the first goal of the day from a defenders deflection.
This seemed to wake Leeds up and they really started to challenge Driffield, sometimes a little to strongly! The game was very even and at half time the score remain 1-0 to Driffield.
In the 2nd half Driffield seemed to find the space down the middle and were quickly getting the ball up the pitch, Ash Gate been in a great position many times and forcing the Leeds keeper to makes some very good saves. Eventually when the ball went through again this time Ash saw Fiona making the run across goal and struck the ball well for her to get a lovely angled deflection, hitting the backboards with vigorous applause! 2-0.
Leeds were always pushing forward and put a lot of nice passes together but the defence of Henri Williams, Harriet Dobson, Molly Coombs, Vicky Scott, Eve Naylor, Lucy Wilson and Lucinda Collinge all worked well to thwart their advances.
Driffield were given a short corner mid way through the second half for a foul in their attacking D and a decision to do the IN/OUT routine was taken by the Driffield players, the result was the ball in the back of the net from Lucinda Collinge but the umpires deemed it not to be because of the ball apparently hitting a Driffield foot......rubbish!!
Unfortunately Driffield's concentration lapsed slightly after this and a loose Leeds player took the ball into the D and scored with about 3mins to go......2-1, could Driffield hold on? of course they could, the end result 3 points for a well deserved win.
Girly was shared this week with the youth of Eve Naylor & the ageless Fiona Tuplin.
Donkey.....what can I say was the ever entertaining Vic Scott.
Well done everyone in the squad this season Young & Old, 2nd in the Premier League is a very good position to end in.
