Ladies 1's v Halifax 2's - Match Report - 8th Dec 2018
On Saturday 8th December Driffield Ladies took on Halifax at home in the last game before the Xmas break. The ladies played Halifax in the first game of the season back in September and unfortunately lost, since then the ladies have been doing very well and at this half way stage of the season are at the top of the Yorkshire Premier Division and leading by 6 points, so they were very determined not to lose this time round.
The game started at a good pace and almost immediately Driffield had the first strike which should of resulted in a goal but Fiona Tuplin
who had virtually gone round the keeper but hooked the ball wide of the post, much to her dismay!
The game then ebbed and flowed with everyone working hard in defence and attack and shots at goal came from both sides. Unfortunately one of the strikes from a Halifax attacker would of gone into the goal if it hadn't been for a Driffield foot that deflected the ball wide giving the umpire no option but to award a penalty flick, Driffield were very confident in the fact that their GK and captain Lucy Wilson
would have a good chance of saving it as she has an excellent record in this department, she didn't disappoint as she produced a fantastic save as the ball was going top net to keep the score at 0-0. Following this let off Driffield starting to push more up the pitch resulting in a fantastic strike across into the D from Henri Williams
who had just come on as left wing back to Ash Gate who first time sliced the ball across the GK creating a lot of spin on the ball which hit the post then did a back spin over the line to finish the first half 1-0 up for the home side.
Driffield had to keep the pressure up as Halifax did not look like a team that were near the bottom of the table. The Driffield girls create quite a few short corners and finally one came off, Hannah Horsley
injected the ball out strongly and accurately to stick stopper Tuplin, Williams was in on the action again with a sweet strike into the left corner of the goal to put the home team up 2-0.
Halifax did not give up and achieved their own short corner. Unfortunately there was a bit of confusion on the run out of the Driffield's defenders and Halifax slotted the ball in the right hand corner of the goal with about 10 minutes to go. The Driff girls pushed hard to get another goal but the Halifax keeper made some great reaction saves keeping her team in the game.
The game ended 2-1 with Driffield keeping their place at the top of the table and able to enjoy their Secret Santa knowing it's all to play for in the New Year.
