Ladies 1's v Harrogate 2's - Match Report - 13th Oct 2018
By Henri Williams
On Saturday 13th October, Driffield Ladies 1’s hosted Harrogate Ladies 2’s, marking their first league game of the season on home turf.
Driffield started the game strongly in the new formation, and within the first 10 minutes, this saw Vicky Scott drive the ball down the left wing, finding Ash Gate in the D who put the ball past the Harrogate goal keeper. With an early lead for Driffield, Harrogate began to fight a little harder, resulting in Driffield having to get back and defend for a short while. However, with sweeper Molly Coombs, and defenders Henri Williams and Lucinda Collinge, the ball was quickly distributed up the pitch into the play of Steph Robinson, Hannah Horsley, and Rose Backhouse, who covered the ground pushing the ball back up to the high forwards Fiona Tuplin and Ash Gate. Fiona was quick to find a Harrogate defenders foot, which meant a short corner was awarded to Driffield. A strong strike from Henri Williams was unfortunately saved by the Harrogate goal keeper, but Fiona was quick on the rebound to make the score 2-0.
2-0 up, Driffield were determined not to just stop there. Winger Kay Bloomfield continued to effortlessly sprint past the Harrogate players down the right, giving the forwards even more chances up there, putting pressure on the Harrogate defence yet again.
With not long before half time, Driffield were working great. With Steph Robinson, Hannah Horsley and Keira Dinsdale in midfield running the ball around players, they were fast to find Vicky Scott, who took a strike that deflected off the Harrogate players stick into the goal to make it 3-0 for half time.
The second half saw Harrogate come back much stronger, which resulted in Driffield’s defence of Henri, Molly, Lucinda and Vicky with GK Lucy Wilson having to defend several short corners one after another. Fortunately for Driffield, Harrogate couldn’t quite score from these chances. Harrogate had a few more shots on goal soon after, but GK Lucy Wilson saved them, distributing the ball back out to wingers Kay and Vicky.
Building from the back like we had practiced in training, Driffield were back on the attack, and hard work from everyone meant Driffield soon had another short corner. Hannah dragged the ball out, and with a stick stop from Fiona, this allowed Henri to take a brilliant shot on goal that brought the score up to 4-0.
With the second half being more defensive for Driffield, 10 minutes from the end saw Driffield defending a short corner. With Driffield having three runners and one person on post, a strike from Harrogate found one of their players on an empty right post to put the ball in Driffield’s goal to make the score 4-1.
Driffield fought hard in the strong winds for a final 5 minutes before full time to secure 3 points for today’s game.
Girly: Keira Dinsdale for great work in midfield.
Donkey of the day: Lucinda Collinge, for asking a stupid question at half time.
Team: Wilson (GK), Williams, Coombs, Collinge, Robinson, Backhouse, Dinsdale, Horsley, Scott, Bloomfield, Gate, Tuplin.
