Ladies 1's v Halifax 2's - Match Report - 22nd Sept 2018
By Henri Williams
Halifax 2's (2) v Ladies 1's (1)
On Saturday our Ladies 1s travelled away to Halifax to play their first league fixture of the 2018/19 season. With nerves riding high, our starting 11 stepped out onto the Halifax pitch, having won first pushback. On the umpire’s first whistle, the team started well, despite only recently committing to a new team formation. As the team eased into their new structure, the game became well commanded from the back by sweeper Molly Coombs, together with some strong defensive clearances from Henri Williams, Eve Naylor and Lucinda Collinge. Following some interesting umpire decisions, the Driffield ladies soon fell victim to a goal from Halifax. Still determined that their chances of a win were still within grasp, Driffield stuck to their guns, fuelled by some relentless drives by Vicky ‘the workhorse’ Scott, who was keenly supported by Steph Robinson and Keira Dinsdale-Young in the midfield.
After some tireless attacking and distribution from Hannah Horsley and Fiona Tuplin, Driffield started to look dangerous in the oppositions defensive D, but despite their efforts were left without reward. As half time approached, Driffield became punctured by another Halifax goal, leaving the frustrated Driffield side 2-0 down at half time.
After the restart a fantastic stick save came from GK Lucy Wilson, which denied Halifax another goal. Despite strikes at goal from the forward line the Halifax keeper kept Driffield from scoring. Finally Driffield’s efforts were rewarded by a goal from Jenny Dawson who found the goal after some promising attacking play from Kay Bloomfield and Ash Gate.
Not the start of the season the Driffield Ladies had hoped for but some strong foundational play, which offers room for some promising development ahead of their next fixture away at Sheffield Hallam.
