Back to Business
By Henri Williams
It was business as usual for driffield M1s this week as they summoned up a full squad to face Leeds M3s at the leisure centre.
That's not to say the woldsmen made it easy for themselves going a goal down in the first 5 minutes following some sloppy play. But Gate soon drew the scores level with a straight strike from a short corner.
The game then became fiercely contested with both sides missing a number of chances. Eventually Levitt managed to find the back of the net to take the lead but Leeds soon drew the scores level 2-2 following a misunderstanding between Dewhirst and Needham on the right.
However, by the middle of the half the Driffield machine began to fire on all cylinders and by half time Levitt and Cherry had scored 5 more goals between them to take the lead 7-2. The Leeds players were clearly thunderstruck to see their formation pulled apart so ruthlessly by a Driffield team on the top of their game.
But worse was to come for the wessies in the 2nd half as the Woldsmen continued to run riot and the Leeds defence was just not able to handle the Driffield forwards in the final third of the pitch. Driffield were constantly opening up the Leeds defence allowing Levitt and Cherry to take their goal tallies for the game to six and four respectively. Shephard and the young casanova Martindale also found the back of the net to take the score to 13-3.
Leeds were to get a consolation goal in the final minute from a short corner to finish the game 13-4 but they wont have taken any pleasure from it. This was a demolition job from Driffield and Leeds will be looking to improve before the two teams meet again next season.
The woldsmen still have two big games left in the season as they travel to Durham University next week and then to Brigg the following week. Both the teams are vying for promotion into North One and Driffield will be looking to put a marker down for next season by taking all 6 points.
