One to Forget

11 men just not enough.
Driffield M1s (5) Vs North Shields (7)
Driffield M1’s trek up to North Shields this weekend will be an experience they will just want to put behind them. With 5 regulars unavailable the Woldsmen could only field 11 men, with Trowsdale drafted in from the 2s to shore up the midfield.
Despite this weakened squad Driffield did start brightly, taking the lead in the first half 2-0 following goals from league top scorer Levitt. However, it was clear that this was going to be an uphill struggle for the Woldsmen with no subs and Robson carrying an injury in midfield. North Shields were able to play themselves back into the game and by half time had brought the scores level 2-2 and then turned the tables shortly into the 2nd half with a third.
Driffield responded well though and quickly took the lead again following goals from Cherry and Robson to take the score to 4-3. However, this was as good as it was to get for the Woldsmen as they gradually found it increasingly difficult to maintain possession of the ball. The result was that for much of the last quarter of the game Driffield were put under the cosh by the Geordies and the wheels began to fall off as they started leaking goals like a sieve.
North Shields managed to score 4 goals within a spell of 10 minutes to put the game past Driffield, who were visibly struggling to hold on to the ball and to mark their opposing players tightly enough. At 7-4 down with 5 minutes on the clock Robson gave Driffield a glimmer of hope with a characteristically sneaky goal, but it was all too little too late. The Woldsmen valiantly battled to the end but the final whistle ultimately blew for a 7-5 victory for North Shields.
A disappointing result for an under strength Driffield team but they remain in 5th place in the league which they will now be hoping to hold on to with just 3 games left in the season.
