Double Header Weekend
By Henri Williams
It was a weekend to remember for Driffield M1s with two big wins in two days up in Tyne and Wear. The first victim was Gateshead M1s on the Saturday, where Driffield dominated possession from the starting whistle with the woldsmen having a lot of success down the right through Robson. Gateshead could not sustain the pressure for long and after 10 minutes Cherry opened the scoring with a powerful reverse stick strike. This was quickly followed by a goal from a well-orchestrated penalty corner that saw Needham deflect the ball into the back of the net for his debut senior goal. It was then the turn of another young Driffield player to score when moments later Martindale increased the lead to 3-0 with a belter of a shot from the top of the D after some fantastic build up play. Driffield were now rampant, but star striker Levitt couldn’t hide his blushes after he then missed an open goal from 2 foot out. However, he was able to redeem himself before half time by extending the lead to 4-0 with a well taken goal.
Gateshead made a much more positive start to the 2nd half and managed to score 3 quick goals to take the score to 4-3 with 15 minutes left. Sometimes teams make their own luck and that was certainly the case when Jackson slung a misplaced aerial across the pitch that luckily found its way on to Cherry’s stick. The veteran striker made no mistake in taking the opportunity and ran into the opposition D to extend the lead to 5-3. This really put the game past Gateshead and in their desperation to level the scores Driffield were able to hit them on the break which resulted in 2 more goals for Cherry and a final score line of 7-3 to the Woldsmen. It should also be mentioned that Gate, Lee and Falkingham also had above average performances.
