Mens 1's Match Report - 24th Nov 2018
Marton Furness M1s 1 Vs Driffield M1s 1
Driffield were up in Teeside this Saturday to take on an in form Marton Furness side, but the woldsmen were fielding a strong squad and were confident of making a good account of themselves.
This was evident in the first half as the Driffield side were clearly brimming with confidence moving the ball rapidly round the pitch with numerous attacks launched from Needham and Lee in defence down the wings via Martindale, Dewhirst and Wallace who were sharing the wide midfield duties. This was creating opportunities for Levitt and Cherry up front and the pivot was also used to good affect with Miller, Gate and Robson always on hand in midfield to switch the play.
Marton Furness were evidently quite surprised by the onslaught they were facing and regularly fell back into a half court press to try to absorb some of the pressure. But the chances for Driffield kept coming from open play and short corners and eventually Cherry was able to parry the ball round the keeper to Levitt wide in the D who managed to clinically slot the ball between the posts to take the lead. Minutes later Martindale had another great chance to score but his chip over the keeper just fell into the side netting. The half ended with Driffield 1-0 up and in great spirits, but the Woldsmen really should have taken more of the opportunities to extend their lead.
The second half started much the same, with Driffield attacking dangerously down the flanks with Shephard, Robson and Bell battling hard to maintain Driffield dominance in the midfield. But Driffield continued to spurn more chances with star striker Cherry even missing an open goal from 2 yards out. But as the match wore on Marton Furness managed to tighten up on the amount of space they were giving the Driffield wide players and the game became more and more centralised which played to their strengths. Driffield then found they were getting fewer opportunities on goal and were under regular pressure from long balls played through the middle of the pitch to the Marton Furness forward players. As a result central defender Jackson and goal keeper Falkingham were required to work extremely hard to keep the Teesiders from equalising.
However, it was clear a goal was coming for Marton Furness and when Bell took a fraction too much time on the ball on his own 23 metre line a Marton Furness striker was quick to relieve him of it and charged into the D to fire the ball past Falkingham to bring the score level 1-1.
With 15 minutes remaining on the clock the heavens opened and the game descended into a physical war of attrition with both sides fighting for supremacy of the midfield and good opportunities opening up at both ends of the pitch. Falkingham was having to be right at the top of his game, pulling off a number of great reaction saves to keep the score level. But Driffield also wasted some more good chances and Bell nearly made amends for his error earlier in the half with a great exchange with Cherry which put him through one and one with the Marton Furness keeper who spectacularly saved his flick that was headed for the top corner of the goal.
The game finished with one last short corner for Marton Furness which the Driffield defence dealt with calmly despite a lot of noise from the strong home support and as Jackson cleared the ball off the side-line the umpire blew for full time. Driffield will be disappointed not to take all 3 points but should still be proud of the hard fought draw away from home along with the fact that the team continues to go from strength to strength.
Next week the woldsmen face North Shields at home and will be looking to continue this fine run of form and will be hoping that they start to reap the rewards for it.
