Mens 1's Match Report - 17th Nov 2018

Driffield M1s 2 Vs Sheffield Hallam M2s 3
On Saturday Driffield hosted unbeaten Sheffield Hallam 2s at the leisure centre. This game, against the league leaders, marked the culmination of a tough run for the Woldsmen having had to face the league’s top 5 sides in the last 6 games.
It was clear from the off that Driffield were suffering a bit from nerves as initially they kept giving the ball away a little bit too cheaply. Hallam on the other hand had evidently come to the game expecting to win and were causing a lot of trouble for the Driffield back line and drawing some fantastic saves from Falkingham in goal.
However, Driffield did eventually settle into the game and began to show the Sheffield team what they are capable of with a number of circle penetrations from Levitt and Cherry up front and Dewhirst and Needham from the right. Gate and Robson also began to get a handle on the Hallam midfielders who had been launching a series of raids from the middle of the park.
But even so, Driffield were still guilty of some sloppy mistakes and a lack of patience at times and for this they were swiftly punished by Hallam and found themselves 0-2 down at half time following a well worked Hallam goal and a flick from a short corner that Robson was disappointed not to stop on the post. Indeed Sheffield could easily have extended their lead further if it hadn’t been for some great keeping from Falkingham.
In the second half Driffield played much better and held on to the ball much more effectively, with much of the play going down the left side through Lee and Martindale, with support from Voase and Wallace. It was a great response from the Woldsmen and clearly not one Sheffield were expecting as they became increasingly frustrated by the quality of the Driffield play.
However, it was Hallam who were to open the scoring in the second half after they broke hard at the Driffield defence and one of their forwards found enough space in the D to fire a reverse stick shot past Falkingham to extend their lead to 3 goals.
This was a hammer blow for Driffield but rather than capitulate they actually upped their game and began to press Sheffield very high up the pitch with the ball being recycled from side to side by Jackson and Gate, with Shephard and Miller causing lots of problems for Hallam in the middle.
This became too much for Sheffield who really began to lose their heads and quickly found themselves with two men in the sin bin for dissent to the umpires. With Sheffield down to 9 men Driffield drove home their advantage in numbers and before long Cherry expertly chipped the ball over the advancing Sheffield keeper with the reverse of his stick to make the score 1-3. Then, just two minutes later, Wallace played Cherry in on goal again who wedged the ball hard into the back of the Sheffield goal to reduce the deficit to 2-3.
With just 5 minutes left on the clock, Driffield continued to press hard to try to find an equaliser but Sheffield managed to grind out the win and take all 3 points. But yet again this Driffield team can be very proud of another good all round performance and will be looking to put plenty more points on the board against some of the lower teams in the league over the next few weeks and travel up to Teeside next Saturday to face Marton Furness.
