Mens 1's Match Report - 13th October 2018

Driffield M1s 8 vs Morpeth 1s 0
It was back to the drawing board for Driffield M1s after a heavy defeat to newly promoted Leeds Adel 1s last week as they prepared to face the other team promoted into the league this year, Morpeth 1s.
The Woldsmen were desperate to get back to winning ways and the captain’s pre match focus had been on maintaining the team’s formation and valuing possession of the ball. The system remained unchanged, only Miller had been drafted in to replace Bell who was needed at Ben Rhydding for the 2s and Dewhirst was pushed out wide from the centre of Midfield.
From the off it was clear that the message from Captain Gate had got through to the Driffield players who controlled possession with great composure, making the ball do the work. Unlike the previous week they were making full use of the entire pitch with the usual fluid play from the back 3 of Jackson, Lee and Needham finding the wide players, Dewhirst and Voase in plenty of space. But Driffield were no longer just driving straight towards the opposition D, but were also recycling the ball back into Gate, Miller and Shepherd in midfield who either moved it back safe to the defence or were able to pick out Cherry and Levitt in a yard of space up front. The effect was that the Morpeth players were made to chase the ball all over the pitch and they began to visibly tire and lose their shape as a result.
Driffield were deserving of a goal and it was soon to come after some great work in midfield allowed Shephard to put the ball through to Levitt in the opposition D who clinically fired the ball through the keeper’s legs to take the lead. This just seemed to buoy the Driffield players on and soon after, some great work in the Morpeth D from the forwards allowed a tap in for Cherry to make it 2-0.
Morpeth were struggling to respond to the onslaught and worse was to come after a long aerial ball from Gate put Levitt clear on goal again who rounded the approaching keeper and then had to dive to reverse stick the ball into the goal to extend the lead to 3.
It was evident now that all the Driffield players had their tails up and none more so than the young Voase who received the ball outside the Morpeth D, beat two players and smashed a reverse stick shot past the keepers left foot to make it 4-0. Then just before half time Cherry not wanting to be outdone similarly ran through several Morpeth defenders before smashing the ball in to the back of the net for a fifth goal.
Driffield were careful not to become complacent in the 2nd half and Morpeth came hard at the home team, evidently trying to get themselves back into the game. But Driffield absorbed the pressure very well and having regained possession were awarded a short corner after Dewhirst dragged the ball onto a Morpeth foot. A well drilled short corner routine then provided a grinning Robson with a tap in for the sixth.
There was really no way back for Morpeth once this goal had gone in and Cherry put the game completely out of reach after he received the ball at the top of the D after some more good work from the midfield and masterfully made himself some space to complete his hatrick with a wonder strike into the back of the net.
Morpeth then nearly managed a consolation goal when a great shot was spectacularly saved by Falkingham in goal. But soon after Levitt then completed his own hatrick and put the game to bed with a powerful slap from another Driffield short corner and the game finished 8-0.
The result takes Driffield M1s to 3rd place in the North Two (East) league and will send a message to Richmond who they will be travelling to play next Saturday. Thanks to the Sponsor Yorkwold Pigpro and to the Spread Eagle for the hospitality.
