M1's Rampant at Home

Driffield Men’s 1s hosted Leeds 4s on Saturday, the home side in confident mood and standing atop Yorkshire 1st division despite a first league loss away at Boston Spa two weeks ago.

The game saw a sloppy first 10 minutes from the home side, and Leeds took advantage with a well finished goal to take the lead. This however acted as nothing but a wake up call to Driffield and fired them into gear, passes started reaching players and within 5 minutes they levelled up when Will Foster intercepted a Leeds pass out from the back, a last ditch tackle from the Leeds defender saw the ball spring up into the air, but without hesitation and with back to goal, Foster nonchalantly volleyed the ball over his shoulder and into the Leeds net for a superb equaliser, the sort of finish even James Levitt couldn’t coach. Driffield took the game by the scruff of the neck, were now well on top and in the mood for goals. 2 more were quickly added from the ever present and always reliable Ed Cherry - like a fine wine he gets better with age. A fourth was soon added before half time with Tom Voase picking the ball up on the edge of the Leeds D, carrying it onto his favoured reverse side and smashing an excellent shot into the far corner with aplomb. Half time saw Driffield comfortably on top at 4-1.

The second half was more of the same, domination of possession and territory from the home side saw Leeds fade, with fatigue and frustration creeping in. Despite numerous chances on goal Driffield were unable to add to their 4 first half goals and the score line remained the same at the final whistle.

Next week sees Driffield host second placed York 2’s in what promises to be close match in a fight for top spot in the league.
