Mens 1's Match Report - 1st December 2018

WON 11 (Yes Eleven) - 3
Driffield M1s 11 Vs North Shields M1s 3
On Saturday Driffield hosted mid table rivals North Shields at the Leisure Centre who could only manage to field 10 men on the day. Captain Gate made a point of not announcing this to the team in order that no complacency crept in as it did last season when the Woldsmen only managed a draw against a nine man Durham University team.
This year however Driffield proved just how far they have developed as a team as they did not allow North Shields any mercy and an electric first 10 minutes found the Woldsmen 3-0 up and a hatrick in the bag for in form striker Levitt. This really set the tone for the rest of the game as Driffield used their luxury of subs on the bench to roll players on and off and dominated possession, playing fast flowing hockey.
This was all too much for the 10 North Shields players who could do nothing to stop the Driffield players from putting the ball into the back of the net with a further 2 goals from Levitt, 2 goals from Shephard (Including one from a very special reverse stick strike), 2 debut goals for Martindale who was clearly elated to finally get on the score sheet, and a goal apiece for veterans Cherry and Dewhirst from a blistering turn and strike from the top of the D.
North Shields did manage to bag themselves 3 goals during the game and these were from times Driffield did fall victim to some complacency. These were moments when the Woldsmen lost a bit of patience and tried to force the ball through the North Shields defensive lines rather than passing it round them and exposing channels and they were also guilty at times of not marking players as hard as they should. But this just goes to act as a reminder that if you drift off the boil for periods at this level you get punished, even if you are running away with the game.
But all in all this was a masterful team performance from an in form Driffield team that have been struggling to translate form into points and indeed they could have put a good deal more goals past the Geordies. One such occasion was when the ball was shelled through to Levitt in the opposition D who very nearly lobbed the approaching keeper with a fantastic touch of the ball which just cleared the cross bar. Another outstanding moment was when Needham received the ball with momentum in the middle of the pitch and ghosted past 3 North Shields defenders before smashing the a reverse stick shot over the bar.
Next week Driffield will host Sheffield University Bankers 2at the Leisure centre and will be very keen to go into the Christmas break with another 3 points to their name.
