Driffield battle hard at Sheffield and come home with their heads held high

Saturday 17th November, Driffield Ladies 3s travelled to Meadowhead school were they took on Sheffield Hallam 3s, who were currently sat towards the top of the table, Driffield knew they had to up their game in aid to gain some points on the table.

On the first whistle, Driffield had push back and started strong with sharp passes between the midfield; Sarah Soanes and Rachel Kendall as Holly Snaith, sitting at the bottom of the diamond, held out for the pass back. However Sheffield were quick to meet the ball and found 2 goals.
Immediately after Driffield realised they had to meet the demands of the game if they wanted a chance. Emily Williamson ran the baseline various times on the right wing and later found Wendy Gate on the left post who slipped it into the back of the net.
Centre forward, Julie Pease, held her position up high trying to find a break through Sheffield’s defence which lead to an assist for Wendy Gate to score again- equalising the game.
Right before the half time whistle went Sheffield fought back taking the lead of 3-2.

At half time Driffield talked about team tactics and went back on the pitch with their heads held high with the hope to bring the game back.

Sheffield attacked endlessly but Driffield’s defence, Sharon Falkingham and Kat Young were not having it and made some excellent clearances whilst Goal keeper- Debs Nelson held the team in the game. In the 48th minute Driffield were awarded with a short corner which lead Lucy Attree to catch the rebound and hit the ball into the back of the net. It was looking very hopeful for Driffield as Meg Sellar directed the team.

Despite everyone’s efforts Sheffield still managed to find 2 more goals, which made Driffield become more defence heavy, as wing backs: Kim Dewhirst and Heather Meason kept the width of the pitch as well as marking their players till the final whistle blew, giving no opportunities for Sheffield to grab another goal.

It may not have been the result Driffield were hoping for but they came away from the game knowing that they had given the performance of the season. Thanks go to Yorkwold pig pro for their sponsorship. Next week Driffield Ladies 3s are on home turf at 11am against Scarborough 1s.
